Plaza Cinema

Benson Signs' continued support for local community projects was recently demonstrated with the manufacture and installation of a prominent double sided projecting sign to the facade of the Plaza Community Cinema, Waterloo.

What makes this particular sign interesting is the use of neon, something Benson Signs have not manufactured in many years due to the popularity of LED illumination.

The double outline red neon and mirror polished letter design harks back to the pre-war golden age of cinema, before the advent of the soulless identikit multiplex.

At around the same time, high level horizontal blue LED illumination strips were installed to replace the previous inefficient system. This new lighting accentuates and highlights the clean lines of the iconic art deco building.

The Plaza Cinema was designed by Architect Lionel A.G. Prichard and built by Ernest Spencer & Company of Aintree. Due to regulations introduced because of the imminent outbreak of war the cinema holds the distinction of opening and closing on the same day; 2nd of September 1939. The cinema re-opened two weeks later after regulations were relaxed.

The cinema has had a turbulent and rocky history, facing closure on several occasions. But, due to the efforts of volunteers and support from the local community, the Plaza Community Cinema is now thriving.

Surely a landmark worthy of inclusion on the local tourist trail along with the Iron Men and Crosby Beach.
